Q: Why do I post small moments and tag them as ‪#‎SelfAdvocacy‬?

A: When it comes to self-advocacy, I don’t think there is such a thing as small moments. Our kids are constantly silenced. Adults with disabilities are ignored. Parent voices and values elevated over theirs. People throw around things like “not having communicative intent”, “did she really mean that?”, and “seven or eight words is all she can do”. Gold standards in teaching include strategies that prompt compliance (“okay!”) and control access to beloved items.

And so it’s no small thing for Diva to tell me no to a haircut, or Little Man to insist that he needs some space. Their voices are important. And they know that I think their voice is important. I think that might be the greatest gift I could ever give my children.
